A team of <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">fifth-year students<\/span><\/strong> (ESME Sudria class of 2019) designed this innovative and useful project&#8211;<strong>Mohamed Bourguiba<\/strong>, <strong>Hasna<\/strong> <strong>Doghri<\/strong> and <strong>Camille Gendreau.<\/strong> We recently talked to these students about their project.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_178\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-178 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-ionis-group.ecole-ingenierie.org\/esme-international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2020\/06\/lifyre-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-178\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hasna, Camille and Mohamed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>What\u2019s the concept behind LiFyre?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Camille:<\/strong> LiFyre is an electronic body monitoring system for firefighters. It\u2019s a device that firefighters wear when they&#8217;re working at a fire. The device gathers multiple types of data about the firefighter and the environment.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>What type of data?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mohamed:<\/strong> LiFyre gathers data on the firefighter\u2019s body temperature inside his or her protective suit, as well as the outside temperature. It detects explosive gases and monitors carbon monoxide levels, tracks the firefighter\u2019s heart rate, and monitors the levels in the firefighter\u2019s oxygen tank. All of this information is sent in real time via Bluetooth to the fire chief, using an app that can be installed on a tablet.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>How did you come up with the idea for LiFyre?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hasna:<\/strong> When the firefighters are out on a call right now, they have no way to communicate with their chief outside the building that\u2019s on fire. So they have no way to talk to each other if there\u2019s a problem! That reality gave us the idea for LiFyre, so that they could let their chief know if there was some sort of health issue or if someone fell, and they could also do a better analysis of the situation from outside the building.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>What did you enjoy about working on this project?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mohamed:<\/strong> The innovation!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Camille:<\/strong> Yes! No one had ever done a project like this in the past, and it\u2019s also a project that affects all of us: the firefighters are here for us every day, and working on LiFyre gave us a chance to help them. It\u2019s really a useful project!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hasna:<\/strong> I agree. We didn\u2019t just want to do a final project; we wanted to create something that had a real-world application that could help people.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-179\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-ionis-group.ecole-ingenierie.org\/esme-international\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2020\/06\/lifyre-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Did you work together with any firefighters while you were developing the project?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mohamed:<\/strong> Our project advisor, Philippe Debadier, is a volunteer firefighter alongside his work as the coordinator for the Embedded systems major at ESME Sudria. He was the one who suggested that we focus on this topic, and he had Camille and Hasna come on a tour of the firehouse in Argenteuil where he works.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Camille:<\/strong> We were able to see the fire trucks and their equipment, and we also got to test out their firefighting suits to see if they could wear our device or not. We were also able to talk to the firefighters and see if they would find this device useful or not.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>What\u2019s the current status of the project?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hasna:<\/strong> We have a working prototype, and we\u2019ve also started developing an app with a database where they can enter the fire chief\u2019s name, and the names, ages, and training levels of the working firefighters.\u00a0 We\u2019re also planning another interface that would allow the chief to send a specific firefighter to a specific location, so that they can closely track each person.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Will you continue with that?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Camille:<\/strong> That\u2019s the plan, yes. Future fifth year students will keep working on the development, and we\u2019re sure that they\u2019ll take it to the manufacturing stage, while adding new functions, like the option to have voice communication between the chief and the firefighters.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>What was your biggest challenge during the LiFyre project?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hasna:<\/strong> For me, it was having to comply with very specific specifications. Specifically, we had to use components that were extremely heat-resistant, up to the temperatures that the firefighters might have to deal with in real life. We also had to put together a large amount of components in only five months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Camille:<\/strong> Also, the components use different technologies. In a short amount of time, we had to learn these technologies, and none of us were familiar with them. Finally, LiFyre also allowed us to work on different things&#8211;hardware when we created the electronic card, and the software to run it.
